ChemicaLogic Corporation announces the release of SteamTab™ V3.0 and SteamTab Duo™ V3.0 implementing the new IAPWS Steam Properties Formulations

Woburn, Massachusetts, U.S.A. -- January 1, 1999 -- ChemicaLogic Corporation today announced  release 3.0 of its popular steam property spreadsheet add-in software SteamTab™ and SteamTab Duo™.  SteamTab V3.0 implements the International Association of the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) Formulation for General and Scientific Use (IAPWS-95). SteamTab Duo™ V3.0, allows the user to choose either the IAPWS-95 formulation or the high speed IAPWS Formulation for Industrial Use (IAPWS-IF97).

The IAPWS Formulation for General and Scientific Use (IAPWS-95) was developed by Professor W. Wagner, Chair for Thermodynamics at Ruhr-University at Bochum and approved by the Association in 1995. This formulation more accurately represents the thermodynamic properties of water and steam, as they are known today, than any other previous formulations. Replacing the 1984 formulation of Haar, Gallagher and Kell, the IAPWS-95 formulation is the current international standard for the thermodynamic properties of water and steam.

To satisfy the special need for computational speed in certain industrial applications, IAPWS adopted in 1997 an industrial formulation (IAPWS-IF97) that approximates the IAPWS-95 formulation within certain tolerances, but at greater computational speeds. The adoption of IAPWS-IF97 renders obsolete the ASME Steam Tables (6th Edition), which uses the 32-year old IFC-67 formulation. IAPWS recommends that beginning January 1, 1999, the IAPWS-IF97 be used as the basis for contracts with respect to performance test calculations for those machinery and systems using steam.

ChemicaLogic Corporation has implemented these new IAPWS formulations in release 3.0 of its SteamTab™ products - the original spreadsheet add-in implementation for the thermodynamic and transport properties of water and steam. SteamTab™ V3.0 incorporates the IAPWS-95 Formulation for General and Scientific Use, and SteamTab Duo™ V3.0 incorporates both the IAPWS-95 and the IAPWS-IF97 formulations as user-selectable options.

SteamTab™ products are seamlessly integrated into all 32-bit spreadsheet applications of Microsoft® Excel and Lotus® 1-2-3. An intuitive user-interface provides users with easy access to the most accurate steam property database. Property values are automatically updated via links to underlying steam conditions using cell reference. Calculations for isentropic, isenthalpic and constant-volume processes are performed with built-in iterative algorithms. Examples for typical calculations for expander, compressor, relative humidity etc. are included in the software.

With SteamTab™ the tedium of repetitive interpolation of steam property values is completely eliminated, so users can turn their full attention to steam engineering. SteamTab™ has become the desktop companion of many power professionals worldwide. SteamTab™ and SteamTab Duo™ could be used to print personal copies of Mollier chart and steam tables in you choices of units and graduations.

SteamTab™ V3.0 and SteamTab Duo™ V3.0 support Microsoft Excel 95/97 and Lotus 1-2-3 R7/97/Millennium Edition for Windows 95/98/NT.
