NATIONAL POWER PLC PURCHASES CORPORATE LICENSE FOR CHEMICALOGIC'S STEAMTAB QUAD

Woburn, Massachusetts, U.S.A. -- December 7, 1999 -- ChemicaLogic Corporation, the leading supplier of spreadsheet engineering software for the process industries, today announced an agreement with one of the leading independent power generating companies, National Power, PLC (NYSE: NP). National Power, based in the U.K., will use ChemicaLogic's SteamTab Quad software as the basis for the thermodynamic and transport properties of water and steam in National Power's generating facilities worldwide. This agreement, signed in November 1999, signifies the continued expansion of ChemicaLogic's SteamTab presence in the power generation industry. ChemicaLogic pioneered the concept of obtaining accurate steam and water properties in spreadsheets by the introduction of SteamTab V1.0 in 1995.

SteamTab Quad, published in December 1998, contains 4 sets of universally recognized formulations for calculating the properties of water and steam. These formulations include:

  • Two sets of scientific formulations – the new IAPWS-95 and the older NBS/NRC-84 - typically used for the design and rating of process equipments, and
  • Two sets of industrial formulations – the current IAPWS-IF97 and the obsolete IFC-67 - typically used for real time monitoring and for industrial contracutal purposes.

These formulations are efficiently packaged with a user-friendly interface available directly within Excel and Lotus 1-2-3. SteamTab Quad provides an unparalleled ability to not only quickly and accurately model any steam related process, but allow comparison of the results using previously acceptable formulations. With proprietary computational algorithms, these rigorous formulations are executed at superior computational speeds reducing the run time in complex process simulations or real-time monitoring applications.

Manufacturers of steam equipment have historically used "fudge factors" to compensate for differences between calculated and measured performance of steam systems. A portion of the difference could be attributed to deviations of steam property formulations from real properties. With the recommended change of contractual basis (from IFC-76 to the new IAPWS-IF97), equipment manufacturers will save significant amount of effort by using SteamTab Quad. SteamTab Quad can make easier the tedious task of:

  • Validating the design/rating programs with both sets of new formulations (scientific and industrial) to determine the equipment performance on the technical and contractual basis, and
  • Comparing the results against the previous standard (IFC-67) in order to upgrade the "fudge factors".
